EmilyRae’s Teaching Philosophy

Design is teachable to anyone with curiosity.

And an educator’s role is to provide the tools, structure, and encouragement students need to identify and develop their creative strengths. I focus on helping students translate these strengths into confident, purposeful design skills that prepare them to thrive professionally.

My teaching foundation began as the youngest university tutor at Auburn University at Montgomery, where I supported students in graphic design, writing, art history, and ESL. I worked one-on-one with diverse learners to build portfolios, improve communication, and develop critical thinking. I also led group workshops where students with shared needs could learn in a supportive setting. These early experiences shaped me to develop an approachable and adaptable teaching style, rooted in practical critique and iterative growth.

Professionally, as a Brand Manager and facilitator, I lead visual communication systems and provide strategic creative direction, in both one-on-one and group settings. I believe success in design does not just come from natural talent but from ongoing guidance, challenge, and support.

I create learning environments which emphasize focused and intentional development. My students learn how to analyze audiences, build design hierarchy, and move from rough concept to polished execution. I integrate real-world frameworks like persona development, storytelling, and iterative design practices to bridge academic and professional contexts.

My academic background—4.0 GPA, full Chancellor’s Scholarship, and over 10 awards like the Student Silver ADDY—reflects my commitment to cross-disciplinary excellence, which I strive to pass on to my students.

A learning environment should be rich in structure and possibility. And I am committed to guiding my students not only in mastering design, but learning to think, adapt, and lead. Through this they become confident and purposeful creatives.
